STORY OF THE STUFF (ESSAY)
INTRODUCTION: Do we ever
think that consumerism is a good or bad thing? Does it come to your mind where
all the stuff came from and how it is process? The effects of the way things are produced and consumed today have
impacts all around the world. There are many ways that consumerism can
affect the environment. Consumerism can cause air and water pollution, land
contamination, and forest degradation. We are part of a slowly enfolding
tragedy in which the end of the world as we know it may be getting closer and
closer. Now I will explain to you the process on how consumerisms affect not
only human but also the whole world.
1.
The first step of the materials process starts
with extraction. Extraction is the process of
extracting/taking/removing some raw material or environmental substance to
produce products. All over the world people are taking natural resources to
provides human needs (ex. shelters, clothes) it’s either by export or import.
Either from animals and natural environments (trees).
2.
The second part of the process is production. Production is the act of making the raw material plus some
chemicals into an output. An output which is made to satisfy the human needs.
Production is done by the help of human work as well. It could be a process
made by machine or manually operated by human. They are including chemicals
which are hazardous to humans life plus the natural resources to create a
better product.
3.
The third part is what we call distribution. It’s the process in which goods are transferred from the source
of product into individual consumer. One good example of this is by means of
marketing. Companies are selling products and people are buying their items.
Nowadays, big companies and corporations try to make people buy their products
by using more and more advertising techniques. Examples are TV commercials,
posters on the walls, newspaper ads and different flyers. By this means people
are being attracted on their product and starting to plan the things they are
going to buy.
4.
Next process is consumption. Consumption is the act of consuming something, either by
eating, drinking, or something you bought and you are using it only for a
certain period of time. People want more than they have now, more money, car, a
bigger house, more shoes and cloths and sometimes things that not so important
and not necessary anymore. They will never be satisfied, because every day
there is new advertisement for new cars, clothes and electronics. "To buy
and to own has become Western society's essential urge" (Palahniuk,
C.2013)
5.
Last process is disposal. Disposal is the process of throwing something which not
needed anymore. It’s the separation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable
substances. But how people separate their things properly? If we consume a lot,
we disposed too much. Not knowing that all the things we bought are baring
chemicals from production which gives a bad effect on the environment when we
start disposing of it.
6.
Consumerism in United Arab Emirates. Locals or
expatriates are giving higher distribution of their income just to buy
something. The higher the income they take the more the amount they are
consuming. " Many members of the community are subjected to imprisonment
because of non-repayment of bank loans that have an impact on their general
behavior and thinking " ( Vadyar, M. 2012 ). Not knowing that the more
they consume the higher they dispose, And the more the possibilities to pollute
the environment. In the U.A.E carbon footprint, our country gives higher
emission of carbon dioxide because of the consumption of energy. Because people
are consuming higher amount of gas and water that is why the government tries
to provide the needs of the people, and reduce use?"The UAE government is
already taking major steps towards sustainability"(How to reduce carbon
footprint in UAE ' 2012).
SOLUTION: Being human
solution is within us. Consumerism is essential to our economy, but government
should imply rules and laws to make sure that consumerism does not destroy our
planet. And as individual it is our responsibility to discipline and to control
ourselves not to buy stuffs which are not important to us. We should raise our
consciousness about the reality of the world. Even the media is a big factor we
should not follow them. Try to set on our mind which is really important. All
we have to do is to buy thing which is needed. Thrifty spending should be
there. Try to learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle. It would help the environment
and society in general greatly "Plant location must be selected properly
by entrepreneurs while planning to set up their business units" (Heyel, C.
2000).
CONCLUSION: I realize that it may well be
impossible to stop consumerism. It has been said that money is the root of all
evil; money makes the world go round. Consumerism increases the consumption of
human, more consumption requires more production, more production means more
jobs and more income in society, and more income means more consumption. This
is the life cycle which if managed properly can bring growth and prosperity to
society. Save the earth, our mother nature for the children in next generation.
